Support & Involvement

A&B Foundation

Preceded by a century of support carried out by company leaders, the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation was formally established in 1992 to continue the company's commitment to charitable giving and support for its key communities.

The Foundation is funded by the profitable operations of A&B's businesses. Its mission, simply put, is to improve the quality of life in communities in which A&B employees live and work. The Foundation's annual giving totals more than $2 million, supporting well over 300 non-profit agencies each year. Employees from A&B and its major subsidiaries devote considerable time to the leadership of the Foundation's two geographically oriented grant-making committees, in addition to their ongoing company responsibilities.

The Foundation provides cash funding to support the efforts of devoted non-profit staff, leadership and volunteers at charities throughout our communities, addressing a full range of community needs. Through the commitment of all, comes a better life for all.

Detailed information is available on the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation Website

A&B Employees

A&B actively supports its employees' involvement in the community, believing that the future of our communities is rooted in the action of individuals.

A&B management and employees serve in volunteer, unpaid leadership positions for charitable organizations, community groups, youth athletic teams, professional and trade associations, government boards and commissions.

The A&B Foundation matches, with cash grants, the donations of time and money made personally by A&B employees and retirees to qualifying charities. In recent years, employees have generously donated more than $100,000 to causes they deem important, leveraging additional contributions from the A&B Foundation for their favorite charities.

The A&B Foundation website has more information regarding the Matching Money program.

Matching Money: A&B will match dollar-for-dollar personal contributions made by employees to their favorite educational or cultural/arts charitable organization.

Matching Time: For employees who contribute time rather than cash to an organization, A&B has a 'dollars-for-doers' program where a gift of time triggers a monetary contribution to that charitable organization.

Motivating Means: To encourage community spirit while at the same time building employee camaraderie, 'Team A&B' provides t-shirts, refreshments, banners, gifts and pays the entry fees for employee teams participating in non-profit fundraising walks/runs.

The A&B Foundation also gives preference to charities seeking grant support which have garnered the active involvement of A&B employees, another means of supporting employee involvement.

Outreach

A&B's operating footprint extends well beyond the pavement around its famed Honolulu headquarters building. Its shipping, real estate businesses and agribusiness operate on the four major Hawaiian islands, across the Pacific to Guam and China, and from coast to coast on the U.S. mainland.

It is important to us that we are an integrated part of the community, wherever we operate.

Part of our outreach efforts involve opening our doors to our neighbors to ensure that our employees are known and our business activities understood.

Some examples:

Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company welcomes Maui residents to tour both field and factory, revealing the sustainable farming and processing practices that enable HC&S to recently recognize 125 years of commitment to agriculture.

A&B Properties launched, in 'joint venture' with Pacific Resource Partnership, a program for teachers and counselors on Maui to discover the "Tools of the Trades" - the skills needed to work in the development and construction industries - so that they can better prepare our future generations.

Matson Navigation Company welcomes elementary students to the yard to see for themselves how goods travel to Hawaii; at Long Beach, high school students tour with a focus on future careers.
